Plastic Bags

Ok, this is the entry where I convince you that Kevin Spacey and Mena Suvari are actually the plastic bag that was dancing in the wind.

For those who have watched American Beauty, remember a scene where the voyeur guy was showing a tape recording of a wind-tossed plastic bag to the lead girl?

The guy was saying how this footage of a plastic bag dancing in the wind was the most beautiful thing he has ever recorded.

You can watch it here on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7mypj8uBH0

There is a lesson here: That we do not see things as they are. We see them as we are.

Fuck, why the hell am I so obtuse again?

Ok, ok. Remember how Ricky (voyeur guy) says that Angela (Mena Suvari - mega crush target) was "ugly, ordinary and boring"? Well, that's quite contrary. Why? Because Ricky sees beauty in the "ugly, ordinary and boring". Like the plastic bag.

Angela is like the plastic bag because she is affected by her environment. She has little control over how she behaves. But although she is thinks she is "ugly and ordinary and boring", but because of the way she portrays herself, she is not deemed as such by her peers. She is like a plastic bag that is caught in the wind. Dancing. Beautiful to the beholder.

Lester (Kevin Spacey) was like the plastic bag. But he later took control over his life. So he is no longer the All-American dad with a successful wife, nice house blah blah guy but instead one who has a firm grasp of his life.

I also remember the movie ended with Lester saying he could be angry for what happened to him, but there is just too much beauty that flows through him to hold onto the anger. He finishes by saying that you may not know what he means by that, but don't worry. You will someday.

I think I am closer to that now.

American Beauty's one of my fav movies under category "abstract"! Now that you mentioned it, I vaguely recall the plastic bag floating in mid air. At the end of it all, I just have one thought about the whole film: beautiful.

Damn. I need to go watch it again.

whatever you say.....it just means to me that even in your wildest fantasy, you still harbour norms. gravity for example, still reign supreme.
