Giles for Intel

Asus - a Taiwanese IT company that provided us with real value for money laptops and other computer peripherals is a recognised brand here. The company was started by engineers from ACER who jumped ship.

Asus derived its name from "Pegasus". Without the "Peg." So it's suppose to be pronounced as "er-sirs"? I know for sure nobody will understand that in Sim Lim or Funan. You're better off saying "ah-soos".

So after the Asus-Lamborghini VX1 laptop head-on clash with the Ferrari-Red Acer laptop has come and gone, Asus has teamed up with British Designer of the Year - Giles "Get Yer Freak On!" Deacon to do up a laptop for the fashion conscious.

Sold exclusively at Selfridges, the price tag at £1,499 for a machine with specifications that cost half the price is not inviting. Coupled with the tribal-ish design that is heavily featured in his A/W 07 collection, not very exciting.

Or appealing. (image from nymag.com)

But generally, you do see a rather obvious new wave of designer-led eletronic products. Prada-LG phone comes to mind. So is the Dolce & Gabbana-Motorola phone. How about the less known and unavailable in Singapore Diane von Furstenberg collabaration with T-Mobile Sidekick 3 phone. Thus far, this is the first of possibly many forays into laptops by designers.

My opinion? I think when you are creative, it doesn't matter what you specialise in. You apply that creativity and sense of design-aestheticism in everything you do. Conscious or subconsciously. So it makes perfect sense for designers to cross fields and design products not normally associated with their name.. It's not a new idea. Design and creative collectives have been around for the longest time.
