Flash Point
Donnie Yen is the man.
If you have not watched Flash Point, well, its run is coming to an end. Donnie Yen was also in Zhang Yimou's Hero. The duel between Jet Li and Donnie Yen in the movie Hero was not the most graceful nor the most elegant. The former would be the duel between Tony Leung and Jet Li over the lake and the most elegant was the autumn leaves set between Maggie Cheung and Zhang Ziyi. The fight scene between those two martial arts trained actors was in the rain and was certainly the most physical. And the scene was such a big thing for fans of martial arts fans cause it was the 10th anniversary of the Donnie vs Jet fight in Once Upon A Time China Part 2. A rematch lah.
And physical is the essence of Flash Point. It doesn't hide behind a visceral front. It is unabashedly a "police catch thief" type of movie. There is a very tired role of a mole played by Louis Koo. And the three Vietnamese brothers were real good. Again, who cares about the story.
The fight scenes were built up to the climax between Donnie Yen and Colin Chou. They were just mixing everything up. Muay Thai kicks, Judo grapples and throws, street-style brawling at times.
Nothing cerebral. A great way to spend time on a weekend.
