Can't fight the truth

I was reading the latest Basic Instructions and it was about female cartoons.

To cut the long story short, there are no Disney female animated character that looks hotter than Bugs Bunny in drag.

Not Minnie, not Daisy and not Clarabell.

It's true!

This just in - singa gets pants

It was reported in Channel News Asia that Singa the courtesy lion will be adopting a new look.

I remember him from primary school and he (lion, not lioness) was looking like this:
Happy and with a tomato red (or is that diluted fire-engine red after several repeated washings??) t-shirt. Ready for a hug, he's t-shirt has got a pirated Watchmen smiley face print. And get (over) this; NO PANTS.

In his re-vamped look, which happened a short while ago, without us noticing, he has gotten for himself a brand new Made in Tiong Hua cheapo plain white t (not to be confused with this band - Plain White Ts) with a lousy misprint. Why misprint? Narbeh, the heart shape was misaligned. Resulting in an asymmetrical heart.
And as a reflection of softer governance, we are not obliged to be kind. Instead, we only need to try. In the former years, it was Make Courtesy A Way Of Life. Yes, it was that draconian - a way of life or death. Ok, not true but you get the idea.

Now we just need to Try A Little Kindness. Not explicit about giving or receiving it.

See the above for Singa's new look. Featuring the same cheapo Tiong Hua made t-shirt and green pants. Singa is embarrassed by his cheapo t-shirt and chooses a placard to hide it.

GREEN
freakin' PANTS!

T-shirt I can understand because I have seen them wearing t-shirts in the wild. Slogan Ts no less.

I have even seen them wearing t-shirts and a red nose in the wild.

But no lions have ever been seen wearing freakin' pants.

Uniquely Singapore.

Desert Island Discs Part 2

......continuing from yesterday's post about the yellow car that got stuck, here's my take of the driver's DIDs:

the tracks in Red are the DIDs of the driver while the tracks in Blue are the DIDs of the other drivers who witnessed the incident.

  1. Accident by Rachel Yamagata
:: From Safety To Where? by Joy Division
  2. Behind The Wheel by Depeche Mode
:: You Ain't Going Nowhere by Counting Crows
  3. Hard To Concentrate by Red Hot Chili Peppers
:: Have You Met Miss Jones? by Robbie Williams
  4. Help Me Please by Hard-Fi
:: Can't Stop Now by Keane
  5. Where Do I Go From Here? by The Carpenters
:: Nowhere Fast by The Smiths
  6. Try Again by Aaliyah
:: Time And Time Again by Counting Crows
  7. Getting Scared by Imogen Heap
:: Before You Cry by Camera Obscura
  8. Say What You Want by Texas
:: Somethin' Stupid by Frank & Nancy Sinatra

  9. and as a bonus track to the normal 8 DIDs....

  10. Will You Still Care? by The Crocketts
:: Is It Wicked Not To Care? by Belle & Sebastian

I saw on Plastique Monkey's website that Feist did a special clip on Sesame Street singing 1-2-3-4 and enjoyed it tremendously. Decided to find more of such musical gems that appeared on Sesame Street.

Feist's 1-2-3-4 being reworded and still retaining the uplifting vibes. It's the tune really.

Norah Jones with "Don't know why Y didn't come". It's hilarious! And it's recorded off Mediacorp's Kids' Central.

The muppet version of Kate Pierson (of the B52s) who sang Shiny Happy People with the REM appears spot on. REM (without drummer Bill Berry) changed the words too and the Sesame Street version is Furry Happy Monsters. And we have Michael Stipe telling the monsters "We can be Happy!" hahaha...

This is the Goo Goo Dolls singing the Sesame Street version of Slide. Seeing Elmo rock out at 2:14 into the video is worth everything.

And finally, we have Mr Johnny Cash. He appeared several times but I like this one best. Tall Tales.

Desert Island Discs

If you don't know what DIDs are....

Anyway, the acronym is short for Desert Island Discs which is a music programme on BBC Radio 4. Essentially, guests are asked to name 8 pieces of music after picturing themselves stranded on, you guessed it, a desert island.

This was a picture taken by a forummer on hwz (the fantabulous EDMW sub-forum). It's at Toa Payoh Lor 6, near the HDB Hub.

The yellow sports car appears to be stranded. On an island.
I wonder what music will the driver bring?

Ha!

I like the idea used in the recent Basic Instructions about movies you should love is really funny. It associated how Belle in Beauty & The Beast fell in love with the beast after being trapped with him for a while with Stockholm Syndrome.

Well, I suppose the step-mothers of Cinderella and Snow White were preventing Electra Complex then.

Template for Ministerial Q & A about price increase

Here's an extract from ChannelNewsAsia: ERP rates in CBD to go up, 5 new gantries added

The question many motorists may have is "why is the government increasing the ERP rates now?", considering that there is a freeze on all government fees till the end of the year.

The Transport Ministry said things like the ERP rates are excluded from the freeze and that traffic congestion, left unchecked, will have a negative effect on the economy.

By making a few choice editions......

The question many (a) [___fill in victims' group name___] may have is "why is the government increasing the (b) [___fill in goods/service with prices increased___] now?", considering that there is a freeze on all government fees till the end of the year.

The (c) [__fill in relevant of Ministry/Statutory Board__] said things like the [repeat (b)] are excluded from the freeze and that [insert effects ambiguously linked with (b), left unchecked, will have a negative effect on the economy.

Tadah! You have a template for Ministerial Q & A about price increase!

Word play

I wonder if you've seen this phrase being used in some 'team-building' activities: There is no 'I' in a TEAM.

Interestingly, there is a 'I' in a THREESOME as well.

But there are 'ME's in a TEAM and a THREESOME.

Not funny?

xkcd

Simply enjoyed these two strips. Just had to share.

Sad part is this: one day, after so much pretence, you may never recover yourself.

images from xkcd

P.S. I think the NSFW pics of Edison Chen, Gillian Chung and Bobo Chan are real! But....leave them be lah....... Let's just be entertained (or disturbed) by their performances on screen. Interesting twist, especially with Cecilia Cheung coming in...who recently had a baby with Nicholas Tse.

Ankle-length or deep?

The past two days, heavy showers bucketed all over Singapore. Some of the low-lying areas were left deluged in the run-off.

Naturally Channel News Asia will report it.

So I saw this article online....

Did you notice that they described the flooding as "ankle-length"?

I thought it ankle-length was reserved for stuff like skirts and dresses.

Can you imagine a ankle-length flood? Wouldn't it look like this police man here.....

Only dry bits are his boots.

Things I'd like to see less of in 2008

Some stuff I would like to see less of in 2008. (Wow! My blog title has a direct meaning!)

SLOGAN T-shirts - You know the trend is going down when Giordano makes them as well. Don't get me wrong. I love Giordano. Especially on rainy days. They've got fantastic items and their continuous endeavor to broaden their appeal is really good. But as far as trends go, it's time to ditch them 3 weeks after Giordano comes up with their take on a trend. I cannot imagine Giordano making tapered jeans. It's weird enough that Levis do that. But I'd gladly check out if Giordano so decide on making jeans using Japanese denim.

Peeping Lace - Go around town, especially Bugis Junction, and you'd know what I mean. Lace is peeping out from EVERYWHERE! Underneath shorts, from heels, from boots, extension of legging, extension of tights, extension of stockings, from sleeves, from hems, from godamn collars - they make the girl look like she has chest hair ! I think there is a strong influence from the whole Gothic Lolita thing. But, when you find lace peeping out from every garment you are wearing (hat, blouse, shorts, skirts, shoes), the lolita effect wears off. Rapidly. And they start to look more like dollies.

CROCS - Cause they were never "cute" or "nice". Chunky almost rhymes with ugly. Surely there is a reason. Oh, and they threaten to cause toes to be ripped off while using the escalators.

CRUMPLER - I own a Crumpler bag too! But that doesn't make it any less ubiquitous. Quite the opposite. We should be seeing the end of it. There was a time when I can recognise a Singaporean overseas. He will most probably be carrying a Deuter backpack. And Deuter is a German brand. Now I can spot a Singaporean by the Crumpler bag. And Crumpler is an Australian brand.
NUM Tank Tops - My god. And please stop parading your dragon boat paddles. I'm sexist in that I find girls with big arms with a dark tan, wearing racer-backs, quite a, turn off. Sorry. My vocabulary is limited. What's another word for turn off? Maybe ladies here can tell me what they feel about seeing these dragon-boating types in their standard kit. Sizzle or fizzle?
Sorry, it's not you. It's your top.

Tapered Bottoms - I warned everyone back in March of this year about tapered bottoms and Giordano slogan T-shirts. Read here. Be careful, don't end up looking like MC Hammer *Can't Touch This. There is a fine line in being fashionable and fashion-oh-no.

So what else is there? What would you like to see less of in 2008?
