Precious - Depeche Mode

I bought their CD album because of the breakbeat remix of this song.

After listening to the song for about twenty over times and poring over the lyrics over and over, I still couldn't quite figure out what was being said. The lyrics pointed to loss and separation but asked for room for "two of us".

Perplexed, I went about searching online for more information and what I found out made me keep the lyrics intact despite not exactly excited about the numerous capital Gs and Hs. I'm not religious neither do I have a religion per se. However I respect Martin Gore's artistic expression and so the capital Gs and Hs remain.

The song is a poignant dedication to his two daughters and one son. He had transposed the trauma that his children might have felt in the midst of his divorce with their mother.

I don't think it is exploitation. At least I don't feel it is. There are many ways to express anguish and countless avenues for atonement. You just choose the way you are best able to get it out of your system and do it. I think there is no shame in releasing your pain.

Precious

Precious and fragile things
Need special handling
My God what have we done to you?

We always try to share
The tenderest of care
Now look what we have put you through

Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give

Angels with silver wings
Shouldn't know suffering
I wish I could take the pain for you

If God has a master plan
That only He understands
I hope it's your eyes He's seeing through

Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give

I pray you learn to trust
Have faith in both of us
And keep room in your heart for two

Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give
