Petal

His fate rests on a rose petal.

He doesn't know it yet but it will determine the road ahead. Even if he could see the welts of her scorn in his heart, he would have blindingly continued forth. For such is his path. And there is no other way. He is neither foolish nor is he foolhardy. There is no guarantee for love and only after he has tried will he know how it goes.

She wonders if they should have another go at it. A chance to fuck it up like she knows that they would. Her eyes wandered across the room to the window sill where the bouquet of roses he had given her for her last birthday hung inverted to air-dry. She leaned over and picked one from the bouquet and asked whimsically if they would stay together. She plucked the first petal which crackled a little before letting it fall. Started with a "No".

His was odd and so he goes.
