Dr Tony Tan and Conjunctivitis

The above two things are chalk and cheese. But both made me wanna blog at midnight.

RED eye infection on the rise? That was in Ass Tee today. Home Section. Page H3. Mild but very contagious.

imagesStare at this long enough and you will get it too!

One of my department guys got it. And he also has got high uric acid in his system. Led to him having gout. Hey, it's not always rich people who get gout. my brother got it once as well. I am not sure if you can recover from it. but I guess you can "manage" it.

Anyway, the guy with the RED eye, he was on MC for almost a week. And the thing is, he spread it to his family as well. I think I am glad he was put on MC. However long it takes, he shouldn't be onboard, just in case it gets spread around the ship (or boat). He was telling me how itchy it was and at night/when he wakes, mucus will be around his eyes...thanks. Too. Much. Information.

Anyway, he lives in the North West area, which was the hardest hit according to the report. Yishun, Choa Chu Kang and Jurong.

Dr Tony Tan. I am like his fan man. (hmmm....deep thoughts)
I remember telling Col Chopra that this man forms the backbone of the cabinet. And best proof that scholars aren't necessarily the best people for every government post. And a defence ministry don't necessarily need a person with military background to head it. He is the man Singapore went to when we were forming critical counter-terror institutions. He connects the dots. And not only that. When he thinks there is a requirement, he makes the dots.

Maybe that why he doesn't believe in the scholarship program that Singapore has. He's right. Why should a position be filled by a scholar who may not want it? And more importantly, does it make economic sense to educate a group of people who choose their career paths at the grand old age of 18-19 (sarcasm, in case anyone missed it), hold them to their word (in the form of contracts, hey, no love loss here, it is a business deal) for 6 years only to see them move on?

It is with this wisdom that prompted him to question the need for casinos in Singapore. If they such blindingly obvious economic pluses, why isn't every state in US having one? There must be a reason why Las Vegas is also known as Sin City. I am not against having Integrated Resorts (read: casinos) here in Singapore. It's definitely not as exciting as sliced bread. A fool and his money are soon parted. So, while I am ambivalent....I am hopeful that it will provide jobs for many.

I'd better sleep....
