iTunes bursting

I have almost 40GB worth of music. That's 7065 songs. 23 days, 14 hours and 20 minutes worth.
The stranger thing is this.

How is it possible that when I ask iTunes to show me the duplicates, I have 828 songs or 4.35GB worth of duplicates and potentially triplicates?

That's 2.5 days worth.
