Horrorscope - Pentagon

I just hang on.

When it comes to relationships with others, be careful about insisting that everything be done your way and your way only, dear Pisces. It could be that you have such high expectations of your partner that they will never be able to live up to your standards. Basically you are setting up the stage for failure by demanding that the person for you is of a certain make and model.

And suffer well.

Suffer Well

Where were you
When I fell from grace?
A frozen heart - an empty space

Something's changed
And it's in your eyes
Please don't speak
You'll only lie

I found treasure not where I thought
Peace of mind
Can't be bought
Still I believe

Just hang on
Suffer well
Sometimes it's hard
It's hard to tell

An angel led me when I was blind
I said "Take me back I've changed my mind."
"Now I believe!"

From the blackest room
I was torn
You called my name
Our love was born
So I believe

Just hang on
Suffer well
Sometimes it's hard
It's hard to tell

Depeche Mode

Precious - Depeche Mode

I bought their CD album because of the breakbeat remix of this song.

After listening to the song for about twenty over times and poring over the lyrics over and over, I still couldn't quite figure out what was being said. The lyrics pointed to loss and separation but asked for room for "two of us".

Perplexed, I went about searching online for more information and what I found out made me keep the lyrics intact despite not exactly excited about the numerous capital Gs and Hs. I'm not religious neither do I have a religion per se. However I respect Martin Gore's artistic expression and so the capital Gs and Hs remain.

The song is a poignant dedication to his two daughters and one son. He had transposed the trauma that his children might have felt in the midst of his divorce with their mother.

I don't think it is exploitation. At least I don't feel it is. There are many ways to express anguish and countless avenues for atonement. You just choose the way you are best able to get it out of your system and do it. I think there is no shame in releasing your pain.

Precious

Precious and fragile things
Need special handling
My God what have we done to you?

We always try to share
The tenderest of care
Now look what we have put you through

Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give

Angels with silver wings
Shouldn't know suffering
I wish I could take the pain for you

If God has a master plan
That only He understands
I hope it's your eyes He's seeing through

Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give

I pray you learn to trust
Have faith in both of us
And keep room in your heart for two

Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give

Flashpoint

Since anonymous mentioned, yes, please watch Flashpoint if you are a fan of Hong Kong martial arts films. Or a fan of Donnie Yen. Or Louis Koo.

From the teaser trailer I caught a month ago, it is not meant to be intellectual. All I heard in the trailer was the music, guns going off, screeching of car tires, clanging of metal and assorted "kung fu" sounds. No conversations. How cool.

Check it out here.

Invisible Target

Watched Invisible Target just now. Had Nicholas Tse, Shawn Yue and Jaycee Chan in it. A so-so movie by Benny Chan. The same guy who did the Jackie Chan New Police Story....with Daniel Wu as the bad guy...

All in all, it's always nice to see Shawn Yue and Nicholas Tse on the big screen. Edison Chen would be a great alternate choice for Jaycee Chan. My god, does he look like his dad....

Anyway, noted some stuff......

The Mental Institution that was shown in the movie, I think I was there before. It was the church where Tommy and May wed.

Bayview Church of Seventh-day Adventist, Clear Water Bay, Sai Kung New Territories.

The scenery behind the church....

The stunts were quite good. Nicholas did most of his own stunts. But there was a scene towards the end when he was seen tumbling backwards down a flight of steps....the slo-mo clearly revealed the trick....the "steps" were actually drawn on, complete with shadows. So he just kinda fell backwards down a slope. Difficult as it is but much easier and safer compared to a flight of steps.

And also Shawn Yue's treatment of the intel officer. Got treat girlfriend like that one meh? I mean, seriously, do girls really dig bad guys who treat them rough.....and in the end, give them a hug and say sorry as if nothing happened??? Win liaos....

I love the way Benny Chan did not restrict himself and make everything look P.C. If the "heroes" look like they should be smoking cigarettes, damn hell they should be smoking then. Who cares about "oh, won't they be bad role-models?" If you bring your child to watch a movie that is about police and thief, don't expect them to play with My Little Pony and screaming "Stop, Please stop! I really don't want to hurt you! Please relinquish your weapons!". It should be more like "Drop your gun you muthafucking assholes!". No "please."

The Simpsons - The Movie. Doh!

*contains no spoilers*

It is my duty to inform you that there are lots of interesting bits after the movie has ended and the credits are rolling.

Maggie Simpson's first word is "sequel". Which is actually not a fact. This is only a "movie fact" because in the actual series, Maggie's first word was "daddy". So.....

And also listen out for The Springfield Anthem sang in tune of La Marseillaise which is the national anthem of France. A country that has given us great things like love-making, wine and cheese. In no particular order of preference.

"I can't believe we're paying for something you can get for free on television at home."
- Homer Simpson

Itchy is the mouse, Scratchy is the cat. Please remember that.

Kazuo Ishiguro and mono no aware

I was taken by the phrase "mono no aware" or "物の哀れ" in Japanese

NASA - New Alcohol Sustained Astronauts

Following the reports on heavy alcohol usage by NASA astronauts, it's easy to make light of the news.... with a slew of "Houston, we have a problem" jokes.

Houston, We Have A Problem

Houston, we have a problem - we ran out of beer.

Houston, we have a problem - You forgot to pack cola to go with my rum.

Houston, we have a problem - we have not lifted off but CAPT. Armstrong is already feeling weightless.

Houston, we have a problem - the beer funnel doesn't work very well here.

Houston, we have a problem - I said Chivas Regal 18 Year!! Not freaking 12!

Houston, we have a problem - The pilot died because he thought he was pulled over by the police. He stepped out cause he wanted to take the breathalyser test.

Houston, we have a problem - William Oefelein is telling us about Lisa Novak again.

Houston, we have a problem -

When We Were Orphans - Kazuo Ishiguro

I must say this book was not as satisfying as Never Let Me Go. I realised that I never did get down to write about Never Let Me Go completely. Oh well....

The central character is Christopher Banks. The plot is secondary, as is with Never Let Me Go. But briefly, Mr Banks grew up in a compound within Shanghai, sharing the splendour with many other foreign families including French, Japanese etc... He had forged a firm friendship with the Japanese boy, Akira, next door and he dreamt of becoming an investigator. His father was kidnapped and shortly after he too was separated from his mother. He then left Shanghai to live with his aunt in England. He grew up, became an investigator and returned to Shanghai, all the while believing that his parents were still alive. Along the way, he came to know a certain Ms Sarah Hemmings who, being the socialite she was, could not fit true love into her life, opting to pursue her materialistic interests instead.

It's really fine to know the plot of the story. Some books attract the reader with a finely woven plot, extensive and intricate. Other books lure the reader into a fictional world using brilliant wordmanship and allow a simple plot to transcend its simplicity. And there are books that do both. This is not one of them.

Just because it appears that two people are meant for each other doesn't mean that they will be together.
The above statement is an apt description of Christopher Banks and Sarah Hemmings. Although this was not the main theme of the story but it came across pretty strongly. Probably because the reader (me, specifically) is drawn to believe that had either of them been less English and more American (generalising) in their expressions of feelings for each other, braving the nasty possible consequences of regret, rejection and disappointment. They should have, dare I say, to freely express, unconditionally. And love - explicitly, in abundance of, and without any care.

The story details unconditional love of another kind. That which exists between a parent and her child.

What I mean is, I realised she'd never ceased to love me, not through any of it. All she'd ever wanted was for me to have a good life. And all the rest of it, all my trying to find her, trying to save the world from ruin, that wouldn't have made any difference either way. Her feelings for me, they were always just there, they didn't depend on anything. I suppose that might not seem so very surprising. But it took me all that time to realise it.
- When We Were Orphans - Kazuo Ishiguro Pg 306

Pure.

There is a bit where Christopher was talking to a Japanese soldier he took for Akira (I suspect this was a case of mistaken identity because Christopher was so obsessed with his quest to recover his past that he was not quite sane. Akira loved calling him "old chap" but this Japanese soldier never once uttered that word. But between these two, the theme of loyalty and friendship came across, a little meekly though.) and the Japanese soldier said a Japanese word Christopher thought might have meant "nostalgic". Could the word have been "wabi-sabi"?

I put up a couple of random pics just to break the monotony of this long post.....

Blur

Damon Albarn might have been the unrealised hero in my life. That might be a mislabel.....

At various junctures of my life, though short, he had entered to give me words of wisdom.

Of course, you must be thinking I'm spouting rubbish.

Damon was already talking to m way back in 1994 when I first heard To The End from their album, Parklife, That's when I figured life can pretty much suck.

Then in 1999, No More Distance Left To Run happened. From the album 13. That mark an ending of sort when I started my life elsewhere.

2003 was a really good year. Think Tank revived a moribund music scene with the lead off single Out Of Time. I should have caught onto the meaning.

Damon, please. Talk to me!

My sister and I are on Facebook but we've yet to decide on how we got acquainted. It's getting weirder........

Status:Sister's name is in need of fun and lovin! :).

I recently saw some works by James Joyce (not the Irish author). I think though they are monochromatic they are pretty loud.

I have this now as my background.

Bob Smith

Don't you think that the figure on the album cover for Depeche Mode's Playing The Angel looks like Robert Smith of The Cure?

Ok, add a "feathery guitar"....

Ok, maybe not exactly "separated at birth" but close enough lah.

Old news

Channel News Asia reported that Anya Hindmarch's eco-bag launch at On Peddar will be canceled.

The trio at fashionation had reported the news like a week ago. *hooray for bloggers!

What is with this bag anyway? I saw on the Taiwan news how crazy the buyers were. I can't imagine it happening here....I'm sure there will be shouts of knnbccb and other such obscenities.

I'm NOT A Plastic bag huh? Well, how about......

I'm NOT A Plastic hag

p.s. Anybody can guess who this woman is?

Mush-a-boom

Planting lilacs and buttercups.
In the meantime we got it hard.

My dreams will match up with my pay.

Altered road leaves deep snow.

We'll collect the moments one by one, I guess that's how the future's done.

Altered road leaves deep snow.
Watching the fire as we grow....

*p.s. I actually know I got the lyrics wrong. It is supposedly "old dirt road, knee deep snow". but I had initially thought that she sang "altered road leaves deep snow". Because you know, the road that is not taken, well, snow will pile up.

Todays is just one of them days

The morning started wet enough. Just as things got drier, the day turned pear-shape.

I gotta retreat to a cove. Count my blessings on one hand and let the stuff that's bothering me get off my back.

Maybe it will happen like a western-styled high noon pistol shoot out. I guess the proverbial straw that will break the camel's back was heaped onto me today.

Exciting. I hope I can lose my job.

I hope I can post something really meaningless.

The headline says so

The latest CASE survey found out that Housebrand Products Cheaper Than Regular Brands.

For real? We need a survey?

Granted it is possible that Marks & Spencer housebrand canned soup will probably cost more than say, Campbells but....duh.

What would they think of next? Nonagenarians lives longer than Octogenarians: found out in joint studies by Health Sciences Authority, Ministry of Health and Heng Kwang Home For The Aged Sick.

What happens if....

How do you live the rest of your life when you reckon that the best thing that is ever going to happen to you, has come to pass.

How long should you wallow?

Just because it appears that two people are meant for each other doesn't mean that they will be together. That's a hard fact of life that will not change no matter how you try to counter it.

I think to live the rest of your life thinking that the surprises (nice ones, of course!) along the way will never top the one that you've had and allowed it to go by.

It's funny how some people who knew me since like before the millennium think so little of me.

Fashion Accessory

If you are out about town this coming days, holding Deathly Hallows is a certified fashion accessory.

To be caught reading the said book at a coffee joint will not give you instant street-cred but it can boost your standing by a couple of notches upwards.

so this is goodbye.

so this is how you say it.

Shoot, they sound like....

I just bought a whole lotta new albums.

Depeche Mode, Editors, Ryan Adams, The Bravery, Smashing Pumpkins, The Fray, Starsailor...

Depeche Mode's Playing The Angel sounds like the old Depeche Mode (not speak and spell era, more exciter stylee). Which if fine by me.

Ryan Adams is still sounding tortured and brilliantly so in his latest album, Easy Tiger.

On The Outside by Starsailor is nowhere near what they are capable of. Sorry kittyStar, I know you do like them but what do you think of this album?

The Bravery's follow up to their powerful debut called The Sun And The Moon is meek. I think they have fallen by the wayside compared to The Killers' second album.

The Fray is US version of Coldplay? Compliment lah.

Smashing Pumpkins....Zeitgeist. So sad.

And current fave Brit band, Editors are starting to sound like, gasps, Snow Patrol. Thank god for Tom Smith's vocals which are vastly different from Gary Lightbody. And this album sounds a whole lot more dismal and dark compared to their debut album. I think it's going to be on heavy rotation. noteworthy too is that they have shed that "joy division" sound.

Horrorscope! 4.0

My reading for the day:

Are you romantically attracted to someone whom you know through your work, dear Pisces? If so, this is not a good time to pursue it. Right now you just might be wearing your heart on your sleeve a little too obviously. This could be unsettling for your friend, and might therefore sabotage the very results you're hoping for. Be patient and let the relationship develop as it may. Your feelings could well be mutual!

Considering where I work, this little divination is very, very scary..... so no, I am not "romantically attracted" to anyone I know through work.

Sir Ian McKellen is looking for a gay bar

Sir Ian McKellen is here in Singapore to promote King Lear.

When asked in the morning interview what he would like to do during his free time while in Singapore, his reply must have made some people choked on their morning cuppa.

Check out his red shoes, tartan tie, cotton shirt with suit jacket combo. All barely holding together by his jeans... oh Ian!

rihana

rihana's umbrella song reminds me of a hokkien song.

Tension headache

The tension headache that developed in between Trentemoller's remix of Röyksopp's What Else Is There and probably Misc Crunch do up on Depeche Mode's Precious is refusing to move.

Go!

How does one feel their age?

Perhaps by what they feel inside. Perhaps by what they see outside. Sometimes it is by what they are told. Other times it is by what they experience.

Standing under the revolving lights, surrounded by the pulsating 4/4 beats hovering at 130bpm that is being blasted out of the speakers and immersing myself in the sampled melody from Twin Peaks, I recognised my age.

Go by Moby came out in 1992. Many people were caught up in the case of Laura Palmer. David Lynch lent his Midas touch on television.

All I wanted was to take part in a rave.

It's frightening that the moment Tony Tay dropped Go I could immediately place myself where I had first heard of the track. I think I must have been in Secondary 3.

Nuffnang Ads

Apparently Nuffnang works.

Previously I put up ads on my blog.....

There is supposedly an advertising blitz from 15 to 21 Jul 07.

The advertisement details are as follows.
Campaign: Pandoras Box Skyscraper Week 2
Campaign Date: 15-Jul-2007 until 21-Jul-2007
Ad Unit: Skyscraper (Top)
Since the benefits I get from my blog is purely intangible, 100% of the money I do get out of the advertising will be donated.

You guys give me suggestions - NKF? Salvation Army?

So please people, please come often. And bloody comment too. I could do with an ego-boost.

Get Yer Freak On!

Ok ok, after that House Of Holland t-shirt, Giles Deacon should be an even more recognisable name.

And so should Mulberry.

There was an initial hoopla generated after Mrs Ong obtained it but has since died down. However with Giles Deacon getting onboard with his Mulberry for Giles collection.

Check these out....mace ring. Sexy!

Roald Dahl's adult-fiction?

Friend was saying Roald Dahl wrote adult-fiction. So we speculated the following:

***warning! for mature readers only!***
~ new stuff added! ~

Charlie And The Condom Factory - adventures in Willy Wanker's condom factory

Charlie And The Great Glass Dildo - sequel to Charlie's adventure with the eponymous glass dildo which was great in size.

James And The Giant Peach - James and....a giant "peach". James making a meal out of it.

The Magic Finger - Hahahah! Story of when Mr Finger met Miss Clit.

Fantastic Mr Fox - following the sexcapades of a certain Mr Fox whom foxy ladies say he is "fantastic"!

Danny, The Champion Of The World - A book written in a mockumentary style. About Danny "the horse" Longhorn's attempt at bonking 251 pornstars. Special foreword by Annabelle Chong.

The Clits - first attempt by Roald Dahl on a beginners' guide. Alternate title was "An Idiot's Guide To The Clitoris - A guide for the rest of us" and "Clitoris For Beginners". Also "Learn About The Clitoris In A Weekend". Filed under Medical.

The Bitches - about how a young Thai boy stumbled upon a convention for trannies and decided afterwards to get a sex change. Yes, he offered sexy time. Long time no short time.

The Enormous Buaya - a tale of the General Manager in an MNC with the headquarters located in Shenton Way.

The BFG - Story of a Big Frightful Gay. Dick Lee provided the foreword. And foreplay.

Matilda - Story of Matilda, a girl who could live out her wet dream. Flip-fantastic! (mykel's input)

Boy - The true story of a chicken-hawk in downtown San Francisco. Don't know what a chicken hawk is? check it out.

Going Solo - A adult-oriented guide to choking the chicken, playing with your own one-eyed monster etc etc. The female guide for pearl polishing and bean twirling is due next summer. Written by Super Model Grand Daughter Sophie Dahl!

George's Marvellous Medicine - George experimenting with dodgy blue diamond of hope (Viagra lah) bought from Bangkok's Patpong market. Things go awry when the age old adage of "what goes up must come down" no longer apply to a particular appendage of his.

My Uncle Oswald - Incest, pedophilia and homo-eroticism all rolled into on. NOT based on Roald Dahl's personal experience. To be read with Boy.

Switch Bitch - Tale of a she-male (aka chicks with dicks) in Bangkok, Patpong. Recommended to be read with George's Marvellous Medicine. Off-shoot from The Bitches.

Roald Dahl adult-fiction. I like!

Hairy Potter

The Order Of The Phoenix was altogether a rather fantastic film that felt just right in terms of pacing. This was the first Potter movie where I have not read the book.

And the used such words like "peaky"! How colloquial!

*potential spoilers but I doubt it
I think it's got alot of themes going on and that makes it such an enjoyable series for children of all ages - including the young at heart. It talks about how connections are made (you two are not the same, it is who you are not that brings you two together), price of pursuit (when you care with all your heart, that is the most you will lose) and loss (things that are meant to be yours which you've lost will come back to you. Just not always in the same way you'd want them).

The movie's just about as dark as the previous but I guess themes have moved on. Death is still pretty much discussed. My sis pointed out that although only Harry and Luna Lovegood could see the thestrals initially (both having seen death previously), the gang who wounded up at Ministry of Magic rode on them without having the ability to see them. Hmm....

Anyway, can't stand Cho Chang much....If I were Harry, I would definitely pick Luna Lovegood. Followed by Ginny Weasley. Reason being Luna has got this kookiness that is so endearing. Yes, Luna is derived from "lunar" or "moon" which is the root word for "lunatic". How clever....and Ginny because....she's a Weasley! And Ginny, supposedly short for Ginvera, which is derived from an Italian word for "Juniper". I love the smell of juniper which is so dominant in gin tonic. Which I like...haha! And Cho Chang? Supposedly Cho is "autumn" in some dialect. Cantonese? Not sure.

Pick the moon Harry!

Freedom and it's derivatives

Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States of America said, "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance".

Janis Jolin, who was only 27 when she died, one of the most influential female rock singer-songwriters in the 1960s, sang in her song Me & Bobby McGee that, "Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose".

Often we understand freedom as having the power to do anything that we want. We don't exactly know how to get it. Some say moving to America helps. Others say you can never get it in a society. Some say it's only a state of mind. Other says you can find it in religion.

Wouldn't having a prescribed notion of freedom be an oxymoron?

Happiness is.....

She's not a girl who misses much

The title of The Beatles' Happiness Is A Warm Gun was supposedly inspired by a gun magazine. When I first heard of such a song, I was mildly excited by the title. Surely any idiot will know that a warm gun would imply that it had just been used.

I need a fix cause I'm going down

I don't have the original by The Beatles but have heard it once or twice. U2 and Tori Amos covered this song but they are very different from the original. Those two versions I have.

I know nobody can do me no harm

This is not about the song. But rather, it's about Wooster Collective. I have been following this site ever since fullscreamriot introduced me to it. Talking about fullscreamriot, it's Sirens this weekend. Anyway, saw this street art featured on Wooster today and it was sent in from Barcelona. Loved that city. So much that I went twice.

Happiness is just around the corner..........too bad the world is round!

She's coming back

And she keeps whispering your name

That was the final straw.

He had mustered all his courage before asking her but was let down by his delivery. His normal cool, calm and collected self was absent today. Replacing him was a bumbling fool who threw caution into the wind. By his sixth glass of gin tonic, he realised that he was never going to be the person he is today.

Her words seemed so rehearsed.

She had waited for that moment. Her reluctance to be expressly clear when she had finally decided was her only regret. She had been his source of happiness all this while. Finally she will be able to find happiness of her own.

It is never easy. However decided you may be.

He had hope for a classic movie scene with all the responses scripted. He had them all memorised in his head but nothing prepared his heart. He tried his best to keep his body still and maintained a slight lift of the chin. But gravity managed to coax the tears out. He bit his lips after she had apologised for the hurt she might have inevitably caused. Always failing in his attempts to keep his lips from quivering. He surrendered a minute shudder as he secretly hoped somebody realised that he was equally devastated.

And that there is no escape from the pain.

In the background, Alison Moyet is pouring her heart out..........

If it's just a little fling
A simple thing
I'll try not to pretend
If it's just for jealousy
She's using me
That might be hard to mend

Whispering Your Name

When she said that you were through
I thought that there was nothing that I could d
Just because she ran right here
Doesn't mean I interfered
Now I'm wondering of we can feel the same
Cause she keeps whispering your name
She keeps on whispering your name
Like she's just waiting

She once told me how she felt
Didn't just want me to hear it from someone else
There were unknowns she couldn't know
But she hoped you two would grow
And when you didn't she was brought to me in pain

And she keeps whispering your name
She keeps on whispering your name
Like she's just waiting

If it's just a little fling a simple thing
I'll try not to pretend
If it's just for jealousy she's using me
That might be hard to mend

Oh what else can I do
But try to give her more than she got from you
And when she wakes up suddenly and she says your name to me
I'll just hope its force of habit and not need

Cause she keeps whispering your name
She keeps on whispering your name
Like she's just waiting

Oh tell me what is fair
When nothing's wrong
And she just stares
Like she's just waiting

Alison Moyet

I so get this

This came up in a conversation and I decided that it's meaningful enough for me to put it in here.

"A melody is like seeing someone for the first time. The physical attraction. Sex."

"I so get that. "
"But then, as you get to know the person, that's the lyrics. Their story. Who they are underneath. It's the combination of the two that makes it magic."

So......somebody

"So Julie's gonna head off cause Julie's got her head on........" That was the line that got my attention. Head on? Being sensible or "head on" as in moving on?

And when the bridge comes on with "Well, every night I rush to sleep. Every point of you surrounds me...." that kind of just made so much sense then.

I think it was 1999 when I first heard So Julie on Perfect 10. I was amazed that it was by a Malaysian dude. Not our neighbours up north cause he is from Kuching, Sarawak (macam Kenny Sia). So neighbours due east.

I think I was leaving for my studies then and was generally excited but at the same time still thinking about a girl. I was still making new friends and old friends were breaking up. So much was happening and to leave it all behind was something that was beyond my control. If there is a feeling I fear most in the world, it would be desperation.

This song is haunting me again. Things do behave in a cyclical manner don't they? Because if you see me now, I haven't got that far.

"I know what you're like but I don't know who you are....."

So Julie

I saw your eyes again
Did we talk last night
About the little things?

So Julie
Does it matter when I call?
I think you're awful young
To try and shoot the world down on your own

But if we dance a while
We could cut it loose
Take some time
Well, how about a little time
We find our own abuse

Now that we were wrong
Sorry that it took so long
In the world we live in
Often we don't know who we are
So Julie's gonna head off
Cause Julie's got her head on

Now we go find out
That we've already lost enough
So now we're gonna win it back again

So Julie
When you think of me
Does it come to mind
We're living in the same room
In the same house
On the same street
In the same town
Why don't you come and dance a while?
We'll go and cut it loose
Take some time
Well how bout a little time?
We find our own.....

Well every night I rush to sleep
Every point of you surrounds me
If you see me now
I haven't got that far
Because I know what you're like
But I don't know who you are
Julie's gonna head off
Cause Julie's got her head on

So we go find out
But we've already lost enough
So now we're gonna win it back again

Turistas

Was walking from Central to Raffles City yesterday afternoon when I was approached by these two tourists.

"What place is there?", pointing at the revamped Clark Quay.

"That's Clark Quay.", pointing to emphasise.

"Where?"

"Here...", pointing at the map she was clutching. I further pointed out Clark Quay MRT station to them.

"Thank you. Where is Meg Ryan?"

"Meg Ryan?"

"Yes. Meg Ryan. Meg Ryan park."

"Merlion? Merlion Park?"

"Yes, yes! Meg Ryan Park!"

"Well, you follow the river and you will get there in 15 minutes."

They gave a frown, cause 15 minutes of walk might melt them.

My Etys are brand new - again!

I got a brand new pair of Etymotic ER6i cause the last pair, after one replacement, went kaput. They have a lifespan of about 6 months under me. At $280 a pop, they aren't disposable (that's more than a pair of Nudies!!).

But I heart these little bitches cause they provide such superb sound isolation. Which means to say, when I am traveling in a public transport, I don't have to hear children crying, China people yakking at the top of their voice, irritants using their handphones as boomboxes.... I have also started using form tips which kind of say "fuck off" to people around me cause it's easily recognisable as ear plugs.

I have to be really careful with this new pair cause Ivan (Cheng, owner of Norman Audio - read this) said that though mine was no longer under warranty, being an existing customer, he'll try his best to get a set at a reduced rate. I think he was just being kind. Probably earned less from this pair he sold me at almost half price.

There is a new model - Ety8, these earphones are built like in-ear monitors but wireless. Looks blocky but in a slightly geek-cool way.

If I ever intend to get a sound system for my place, I think I'll head to Ivan for advice first. Get an audition with the system he recommends before deciding..... Ivan provides excellent service and I know that because although I am not an audiophile (cause I don't go around forcing radios, turntables and speakers to give me a "nice time", neither do I want bed an amplifier) and only an owner of a pair of earphones (which I didn't get them from Norman in the first place), he treated me like he would with the other customers (observed this from numerous visits).

And if your visit ends with a purchase, he always says "Enjoy!" like he meant it. Because that's what it is all about.

Things that make you go hmmm....again

Do gays always start with an end in mind?

How do you title these things?

Was out with primary school friends last night. Being a last minute "put-together", only a few of us could make it. Had dinner at Marche, Vivocity. Wanted to head to Jewel Box but made a detour to Ben and Jerry's first.

Had fruit punch at Altivo (had beer at dinner, not into drinking lately) and enjoyed the slight breeze and the bland band (they did have a few good covers).

It's funny how conversations can meander... ended up talking about the silly garden in our primary school which had three palm trees, a moat and a japanese-style bridge.

Help Me Please

There's no light in the hall. There's no sound here at all. Emptiness.

"Emptiness, rules." He thought to himself. "Why'd I wanna come home?"

He notices that you ain't sat in your chair.
He realises that
no one calls because no ones there.
The wall of the hall is empty except for just a clock, tick-tocking away.

He is alone, accompanied only by his
tears. So many tears.

"Help me please. I'm in need. Cause being alone scares the life out of me."
was the message he left in your answering machine.

The words sounded familiar:
"
Help me please. I'm in need."
"Cause being alone scares the life out of me. Being alone scares the life out of me."

Weren't those the very words you thought of when you were being neglected?

Breaking down the stairs, he whispered to himself,
"Hello loneliness. Hello despair...."

All of this, all of it wrong.

In that moment he realises that
you won't ever come home.
He mustered a grim smile.

You told yourself that they can take what they please. They can take the blame.
You've learnt to forgive yourself and to let go.

Everything, everything is free. Have it on me
.

But as the recorded messages in your answering machine starts to playback,
you kept on hearing his plea.

"Help me please. I'm in need. Cause being alone scares the life out of me."

"Being alone scares the life out of me too." you thought to yourself.

Being alone scares the life out of me.

Ask me what I want

While the crowd is waiting for the final kiss
the one which allows them to sleep well
We'll walk along our own path
the one which will lead us to our own bliss

But we need hints
before we get tired
We need hints
before we lose pace
Now we need a hint
to know we're on the right track

This Is Fact Not Fiction

Sleep has not been coming to him easy for what could be weeks now. His eye bags wore the color from his lack of sleep.

If only he had given her a reason to stay.

He picked up his mobile phone and keyed in the familiar numbers. A phone number he had dialed so many times before.

It was getting light as the night sky finally gave way to twilight.

A Lack Of Color

And when I see you
I really see you upside down
But my brain knows better
It picks you up and turns you around
Turns you around
Turns you around

If you feel discouraged
When there's a lack of color here
Please don't worry lover
It's really bursting at the seams
Absorbing everything
The spectrum's A to Z

This is fact, not fiction
For the first time in years
And the girls in every girlie magazine
Can't make me feel any less alone

I'm reaching for the phone
To call at 7:03
And on your machine
I slur a plea for you to come home
But I know it's too late
I should have given you a reason to stay
Given you a reason to stay

This is fact, not fiction
For the first time in years

Death Cab For Cutie

Petal

His fate rests on a rose petal.

He doesn't know it yet but it will determine the road ahead. Even if he could see the welts of her scorn in his heart, he would have blindingly continued forth. For such is his path. And there is no other way. He is neither foolish nor is he foolhardy. There is no guarantee for love and only after he has tried will he know how it goes.

She wonders if they should have another go at it. A chance to fuck it up like she knows that they would. Her eyes wandered across the room to the window sill where the bouquet of roses he had given her for her last birthday hung inverted to air-dry. She leaned over and picked one from the bouquet and asked whimsically if they would stay together. She plucked the first petal which crackled a little before letting it fall. Started with a "No".

His was odd and so he goes.

Petal

I've been looking for it all my life
And never found it
Got used to being alone
I know how and I do it so well
Even if we learn to speak the same language
How long can it last
You know as well as I do
The way it goes
How it goes

You are the petal in the rose
But watch out for those thorns
You are the petal in the rose
But watch out for those
I've changed my mind
I've changed my mind

I've been waiting for it all my life
And so many times I thought
Hey this is it
I'm ready let's go baby
But it all led nowhere
Turned out wrong
And I still believe in it
But not much
I know I'm strong enough to fall again
But isn't it just foolishness
Knowing how it goes
The way it goes

You are the petal in the rose
But watch out for those thorns
You are the petal in the rose
But watch out for those
I've changed my mind
I've changed my mind

So should we give it
Just another chance
Although I know the odds are against me
We know how to fuck it up
We do it so well
And even if we love each other so much
And plan our lives like we will stay together
Make a home and a family
Can we change the way it goes
How it goes?

You are the petal in the rose
But watch out for those thorns
You are the petal in the rose
But watch out for those
I've changed my mind
I've changed my mind

Initial thoughts on Transformers

AWESOME.

It's really an "All-American" movie. Well, kinda.

I can just imagine Americans gathering in the cinemas and cheering Optimus Prime and gang on.

The movie starts with a troop of soldiers talking. This guy starts yakking in Spanish but at the end of it they all can relate to an American way of life; watching sports (baseball) on a weekend, family and friends.

But really, I think when a group of guys get together, that's what they really talk about...sports.

There's this showcase of Third Generation SAF type of technology as well. Having troops with lasing devices providing targetting for the airboys to drop the package. Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to provide RSTA (recon, surveillance and target acquisition) and collectively managing the battlefield. But of course, the US have been using this since....

And yes, Barricade, Scorponok and Starscream's not dead. In fact, stay for another 2 minutes when the credits starts rolling, you get to see Starscream flying up into space. F22 Raptor. Not a F15 Eagle. Yeah...so Megatron is not a P38 but a...just what the hell is he? Bumblebee is just wrong though. Not a VW but a Chevy? But I'd pay to get a car that can play the right song at the right time though.

Oh oh, not only is there Linkin' Park at the end, more importantly, there is Smashing Pumpkins in the end with a new song. Doomsday Clock from their coming album Zeitgeist.

I'll be back....

how to title this?

Colin had been callously used to promote a war she wished had never happened, They needed him to do it . . . because they knew people would believe him.

Alma Powell

It is no secret that a large number of Americans and many others around the world have had their views swayed by Colin Powell when he asked for the Guantanamo facility be closed. Immediately. That very afternoon he was speaking.

He calls the Iraq War a civil war that the US should pull out as soon as possible without further de-stablising the current situation.

Had he ran for Presidency in 2004, he would most probably have suffered the same fate as John Kerry.

It is a fine balance to be resolute and non-wavering in the face of adversity while remaining open to the ever changing information and knowledge that comes in drips and drabs from a complex situation that counts cultural, social, economics, politics, religion and ideological differences, each as an important factor.

Statistics

This is the price of cocaine in the world as of 2005.

You can get the latest report from UNDOC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime). If you're a crackhead on welfare, move to Colombia now. New Zealand, being so isolated pays shitloads of money just to get some. The image behind the graph shows you how to snort it.

If you're a drug-peddler, useful site to refer to for price-setting. Remain competitive and keepin' it straight up you know?

If you're a drug-user, don't be over-charged! Respect your local dealer.

Lace

I saw this off Kingdom Of Style and immediately checked out Rockett St George.

Lace tapes each going at £7.50 for 50 yards. That's about $22 dollars for 45.7 metres. Which is about $2.10 per metre. The more intricate ribbons sold at Prints are going for $2.50 upwards per metre.

Not bad for "value". I wonder what the lace is made of and if it sticks well.

Go Or Go Ahead - why lyrics shouldn't be dumb

It is not necessary to be obtuse and pedantry in order to be highly regarded. But many things are just too simplistic. I agree that entertainment should be simple. An example: if I were to watch a movie, heck, who cares about the subtleties and references? I just want to be entertained.

But imagine if you could just take a bit of time to think about the meaning behind the choice of words in a song or the imagery conjured up by the movie director. Wouldn't it serve to create an altogether more personal and meaningful experience?

Go Or Go Ahead

Thank you for this
Bitter knowledge
Guardian angels who
Left me stranded
It was worth it
Feeling abandoned
Makes one hardened but
What has happened to love?

Got me writing
Lyrics on postcards
Then in the evenings
Looking at stars
But the brightest of the planets
Is Mars
What has happened to love?

So I will opt for the
Big white limo
Vanity fairgrounds and
Rebel angels
Can't be trusted with
Feathers so hollow
Heaven's invention
Steel-eyed vampires of love
You see over me
I'll never know
What you've shown
To other eyes

Go or go ahead
And surprise me
Say you've lead the
Way to a mirage
Go or go ahead
And just try me

Nowhere's now here
Smelling of junipers
Fell off the hay bales
I'm over the rainbows
But oh Medusa kiss me
And crucify
This unholy notion of the
Mythic powers of love
Look in her eyes
Look in her eyes
Forget about the ones
That are crying
Look in her eyes
Look in her eyes
Forget about the ones
That are crying

Go or go ahead
And surprise me
Go or go ahead
And just try me
